D-Line “Westside Purple Line” Extension Project – Phase 1

The D-Line Extension –Phase 1 project created a heavy rail transit line extension of the existing D (Purple) Line from its current terminus at the Wilshire/Western Station to a new Wilshire/La Cienega Station. The extension will be located below Wilshire Blvd in the cities of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills with three new proposed underground stations. This project is the first section in a three-section extension of the D (Purple) Line terminating at the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital, which will provide seven new stations and a reliable, high-speed connection between downtown and the Westside.

As a subconsultant, V&A, Inc. provided professional engineering services including roadway, drainage, and traffic design. V&A, Inc. was responsible for the street improvement design, plan and specifications development for approximately 6200 LF of roadway impacted by the project at the Western Shaft, La Brea and Fairfax Stations. The V&A’s traffic engineering scope included the development of the signing and striping design, plans and specifications within the roadway impact limits of four of the proposed stations. In addition, V&A, Inc. was responsible for the design and plan development of the temporary and restoration traffic signals and temporary street lighting for the corridor wide system. V&A Inc. was also responsible for the design, plans and specifications for all permanent roadway drainage impacted by the Western Shaft, La Brea, Fairfax and La Cienega Stations.

V&A Inc. also provided architectural design support for all three stations which included the creation of 3d models used to generate plans sections, elevations, and details of the various stations, the scheduling of doors, windows, and hardware, and the creation of site plans at each individual station entrance including the considerations for methane gas exhaust and its impact on landscaping and future bike-sharing installation. Additionally, V&A Inc provided coordination efforts with structural and MEP disciplines throughout the project.
