LAX-Automated People Mover (APM)

An Automated People Mover (APM) system with 6 stations, which would provide access to the Central Terminal Area (CTA for passengers, employees, and other users of LAX, 24 hours a day. The APM system will be fully automated and grade separated from pedestrians and other passengers and would transport passengers between the CTA and the other main components of the Project located east of the CTA, including a state of the art Consolidated Rental Car Facility (CONRAC), and two Intermodal Transportation Facilities (ITF) providing airport parking and pickup and drop off areas outside the CTA for vehicles and commercial shuttles.

As a subconsultant, V&A, Inc. is providing professional engineering services including roadway and traffic engineering design. V&A, Inc. is leading the effort of design and approval of restoration signing and striping plans, and traffic signal plans for various local streets adjacent to LAX and the APM. Designs for roadways throughout the project site developed in Civil 3D allowed for greater cross discipline coordination in a BIM environment. The preparation of plans and profiles for curbs and gutters as well as roadways reflected the various impacts and extents of the roadway design of local streets. The V&A team prepared designs reflecting improvements along 96th St, a realignment of an existing alley to a road along D street and the full reconstruction and resurfacing at Arbor Vitae St. and Aviation Blvd. The impacts of the APM system required the V&A team to use their expertise and design beyond the original street improvement and resurfacing plans proposed. The locations of structural columns along 96th St. required a new realignment to be produced. V&A’s design team proposed an effective realignment which included bump outs and eliminated any need for a reduction in proposed parking space quantities. Additionally, AutoTURN analysis was prepared by V&A for vertical clearance studies and the preparation of turning templates.

V&A, Inc. is responsible for coordination with LABOE, LADOT, LABSL, LABSS, City of Los Angeles, and other various agencies through the design review and approval process.
